After two knee replacements, I am finally getting back to normal, which means painting more regularly. I have created a space in my upstairs office where I can paint. This makes painting at home much easier. I have also been "re-enthused" with watercolor as a regular medium. I have enjoyed using both mediums regularly.
I have joined a group called "KC Urban Sketchers" that meet regularly to sketch, draw, paint and share. This has encouraged me to get out and sketch more often with pen and ink, watercolor, or pencil.
I recently returned from the 2018 Door County Plein air Festival. Once again, it was an inspiring and learning event. It is so great to follow and watch such talented plein air artists paint in the field and then go out and paint on our own. This is the second year, our KC group too the Ferry to Washington Island on Friday to paint the lavender fields. What a treat!
I also participated in my 12th Quick Paint sponsored by the Peninsula School of Art. Over 200 artists descended upon the Sister Bay Lakeshore Park to participate in this year's event. I didn't sell mine, but I will add it to my paintings at the Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor this October.

Baileys Harbor is always a favorite place to paint. This year, Moonlight Bay on HwyQ was so high, it had an entirely different look to it. I had to try a 2018 version of one of my favorite spots. Across the road is an area called Riebolt's Creek. We never went over there to check it out. Wow, it was a beautiful creek full of waterlilies and reeds! Added that to my list of favs. We went into Baileys Harbor, one evening to try a nocturne painting. I set up on the platform by the fishing dock and painted my favorite pub in Door County, The Cornerstone. I have added all 3 Baileys Harbor paintings. They will also be added to my display inside the Cornerstone in October.

I plan to create a new website in the near future. My website is very out of date, and the software I used to create it, isn't used any more. I hope to co-ordinate my blog with my website and offer paintings for sale or auction. It may require adding "Daily Paintworks" or some other commerce sight to do so, but now that I am feeling good again, I am anxious to reach more lovers of original art through the internet.

She lives in Oregon in the summer. In our recent conversations, she has indicated to me that she wanted to learn more about plein air painting, so I looked at our calendar and the Door County Plein air event was the same week as our mutual sorority reunion.
I invited her to stay with us for the week and we could attend both. she accepted but said she want to take a workshop on plein air, if possible. Two of my friends from KC were bringing their KC students to Door Co., and they were teaching a workshop, so we joined them! We painted with them for 3 days and joined our sorority sisters Sue hadn't seen for 50 years. All in all, it was a great week!
After all our winter travels, including a quick trip to Door County, I hardly caught my breath and it was time for the annual Stems Plein Air Event that I had entered earlier in the year. It is always scheduled around Memorial Day and during the 10 day event, the flowers were in full bloom at the Arboretum. I have done this event for several years so my goal for this event was to do something different, and I think I succeeded in doing just that. I have always admired the bronze statue of Monet painting in his garden that is positioned in front of the Monet Bridge. I decided to tackle that and set myself up behind the statue on the grass. As I concentrated on getting the proportions of the statue correct, I noticed many other artists were painting the garden in full color. As I looked at my predominately bronze painting, I decided to paint the entire scene in bronze hues. I titled the painting, "Monet-chromatic". Not sure everyone caught it but I enjoyed being a "wordsmith" for a change.
This one was a 15 days cruise through the Panama Canal! Gary and I jumped at the opportunity to see such an important part on our history and to learn more about how it was built. We weren't disappointed as this special cruise had experts on the subject to enhance our experience. We visited Cabo San Luca and PuertoVallerta enroute, as well as a few stops in central America. All in all, it was a wonderful "bucket trip" Of course, I had my traveling watercolor block with me and took time to record a few special spots.
Our son and his family moved to Austin, TX ao we decided to go back to South Padre to visit them along the way and to have them come over to the Island for the Presidents Day Weekend. We booked a 2BR condo at Bahia Mar, to accommodate them and we were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful sunrise view we had each morning.

My how time flies!

I just had occasion to go back through my blog archives and I realize how valuable a permanent record of my retired life is! It was great to revisit our trip to Europe in 2010 as well as the many other excursions we have been blessed to take.
Recently, I have fallen into the "trap" of posting my work on Facebook. Its easy and the "instant gratification" is incredible. But I have no record of these posts, except to find them occasionally show up on my Facebook feed among all the other activities we do.
The reason I set up this blog, was to record my artistic and travel journeys, that I might be able to show growth as an artist and a lifelong student of art. I didn't realize how much fun it was to look back at these experiences 5 years later!
I am going to try to "begin again" with my activities starting in 2016. This year, like many in the past, has provided us with opportunities to travel to South Padre Island, and to take a "bucket list cruise" through the Panama Canal, where I, once again, taught watercolor classes onboard.
We were blessed to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary and our trip to Door County this summer was a big part of the celebration.
This year has also been a year of commissions. I was asked to paint some scenes from our resort in Door County for my niece as special gifts, and I was also commissioned to paint a statue of the Holy Family as a going away gift for a special nun in our parish.
I participated in the Stem's Plein Air event in Overland Park this Spring and also took a workshop with a friend from college during the Door County Plein Air Festival. I will post a few pics from each of these events, and vow to keep up with this project in the future, if not for the enjoyment of my subscribers, at least for the record! I'll begin with the commissions.
I would like to invite any of you who live in the KC area to see the show which runs through July 19th. There are 100 paintings on exhibit.

I have entered it other years but usually I haven't had the luxury of painting the entire 2 weeks, as it always interfered with our spring trip to Door County. This year, with our grand daughter's graduation in May, we made it back to Kansas city early.
This year, the big problem was the weather! With only 4 days without rain during the month of May, it made it difficult to plan to paint outdoor in several hour clips. I did the best I could and watched the weather like a hawk. Two of our events were planned quick paints and they took place regardless of the weather.
Here are a few clips from our 2 week outings.
Here is my dilemma. Each of the 83 artists participating in this event have to choose 3 paintings they did during the 2 weeks, to enter for prizes and the exhibit. I am not a very good judge of my own work, so I am soliciting your help in what paintings I should enter. I will post, number and title, each of my 5 completed paintings. They have to be turned in by Wednesday, so if you have a minute to reply, I would love to get some feedback. Myers Gary and I have the opportunity to spend the winter in Ft. Myers, FL. We love exploring new areas and thought getting out of the cold would be a great opportunity. I have found 2 plein air groups to paint with but I have also gone out on my own and painted. I love the light in Southwest Fl. We have had mostly sunny skies and everything seems brighter against the blues waters and bright sunny skies. Our condo is near Lakes Park which is a beautiful lake with walking paths and lots of activities. We are also very near the bridges leading to Sanibel, Captiva, and Ft. Myers beaches.
I am posting the first paintings I have done and will post more later.
Gary would be my assistant and our cruises were complimentary in return for my teaching on days “at sea”. Our first trip was a 15 day cruise in South America from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Valparaiso, Chile, cruising south, around the tip of Cape Horn. It was a Celebrity Cruise aboard their Infinity Ship. We had to pay for our flights to South America and other expenses but we decided it was the best way to see a part of the world we otherwise wouldn’t see. It was a fabulous 15 days with an itinerary with everything from beaches to glaciers!
While planning the trip, another opportunity arose to teach classes on a 7 day cruise to the Eastern Bahamas with Royal Caribbean Cruises aboard the Freedom of the Seas. We were going to drive to Florida and leave for South America from Miami so it was easy to get to Port Canaveral for this trip.

We took off on Jan 2nd from Kansas City and returned February 3rd. It was a great way to spend a very cold month, cruising and exploring some beautiful parts of the world. Here are some photos from my classes.

In June, the Save the Fountains organization launched a "Save the Fountains" campaign, as many of our fountains are in need of repair. They set up trolley tours for the public to view many of our fountains and learn of their needs. Local artists were invited to paint the fountains on the day of the tours. Earlier paintings were displayed at the site of the trolley tours at Union Staion where $2000 of paintings were sold. Artists agreed to donate 50% of their sales to the Fountain cause.
Artists were invited to continue painting the local fountains all summer. At the end of August, they were asked to submit their "best" fountain painting to an online auction. The paintings on the auction were displayed at the Mid-America Arts Alliance on Baltimore for bidders to see them in person. There were 49 paintings submitted, and from September 2-16, 38 paintings received bids! $4000 was raised for the fountains! What a huges success!

I was privileged to serve as an art advisor with Joanie Shields and her "Save the Fountains" committee. We worked to get the word out to local art groups and organizations. We also worked with Stacey McBride of O'Neill Advertising, to set-up of the art auction (similar to an E-Bay type auction). This was the first auction of this type in the KC area. Several paintings received 2 or more bids, so competetion helped raise the price of the paintings. Artists submitted a minimum bid for starting the bids and settled on half of the final bid as their payment. I was thrilled to have my entry selected for an article in the KC Star in promoting the auction. I painted the Meyer Circle Fountain on Ward Parkway. My painting received 3 bids and ended up selling at $479.00!
This was the scene aboard the Millenium on the day we anchored in the harbor near Icy Strait in Hoonah, Alaska. The tender boats were busy taking guests back and forth the the island. It was a little misty that day and after teaching my class in the morning, Gary and I decided to spend the day in the Solarium.
The clouds we hanging around the tops of the surrounding hills and created interesting subjects to paint. I decided to paint the hanging cloud above the canning factory on shore. The red buildings were a nice contrast to the green hills. The hanging cloud was a challenge to suggest the soft edges surrounding the hills behind.
John and Lis Chamberlain, who were
traveling with us, spent the day on the island on a
rain forest walking tour with a local historian.
After spending an interesting day at Icy Strait, they decided my painting of Icy Strait would make a great keepsake of their trip to Alaska.
I was accepted by a third party company to participate in the Celebrity Life program while cruising the inside passage from Vancouver to Seward on the Celebrity Millenium. My classes were scheduled on "at sea" days and one day when guests were tendered ashore to excursions at Icy Strait Point.
The company supplied a watercolor kit for each attendee that included a pallette, 3 brushes, 6 tubes of paint, and several 9x12 sheets of watercolor paper. After my proposal for the 3 claasees was accepted, I was responcible for any additional supplies. We did a whales tale and a penguin so I supplied black watercolor which was not part of the kit. I also brought templates for drawing and graphite paper which sped up the drawing process and guaranteed a successful result. Classes were set up in lounges or in the disco and I always had a table to demonstrate on. Several guests attended all 3 sessions and we always had 20+ guests for each class. Several parent and children groups attended as this as this was something families could do together. When I wasn't teaching, Gary and I were regular passengers on the cruise. We enjoyed visiting all the ports on the cruise. I will be evaluated for my sessions and it is my hope that we will be able to do this again. Here are some pics from the classes.
I thought it would be a fun way to share our travels with our friends and family back in the states.
Since then, Judie Stang's World has been a great way to journal my adventures of travel and painting. I have appreciated all the replies I have received from followers along the way.
That is why it was so disheartening to have my followers receive the horrible post, written by another blogger with a similar name. It is difficult to navigate around the "Blog world" but after this horrible post was sent a third time, I went to a chat room on Google Blogs and posted my problem to the blogisphere. I have been chatting with a blogger from Finland who seems to know what the problem is and has helped me fix it. If it happens again, I am going to have to delete my blog, but hopefully it is fixed. Thank you for your help. I hope you will continue to follow my posts and reply when the mood strikes you.

One of the great things about painting a landmark like the Range Light in Baileys Harbor instead of taking a photo is obvious. When we were in Door County in May, the Range light was being renovated. It was moved off its original foundation because it was so close to the road that snow plows had a difficult time working around it. The scafolding was still in place on the sunny day that I decided to go out and paint, so I just left the scafolding out of my painting!

We celebrated Mother's Day while in Door County, by having dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Donny's Glidden Lodge. The setting at Whitefish Bay is one of my favorites. I love the beach that stretches to the north of the Lodge. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to go back the next week and paint the beach. It was a cool day, but the sun was bright and it wasn't too windy, even by the water. I was so shocked that the leaves hadn't started to bloom in Door County and this was May 15th, but I enjoy painting birch trees without lots of leaves, so it was "mission accomplished" Both of my spring plein air paintings are part of my "Quiet Side Exhibit" currently showing at the Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor.
Gary and I decided to "treat" ourselves to a cruise last month. We found a 10 day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean embarking from Ft. Lauderdale. It had two "at sea" days before and after visiting 5 islands, none of which we had been to. We also liked the fact that each island we visited had a dock so we didn't need to be tendered into any of our ports.

I decided to take my assorted watercolor blocks, pens, and my traveling watercolor pallette instead of trying to handle wet oils in our close quarters. I haven't used watercolors very much recently as I have been doing a lot of "plein air " painting so I had to get use to my watercolors again. I forgot how much I enjoy the fluid effects of watercolors and the "drizzly" effects of pen and ink. It was a great medium for the Caribbean waterscapes. At each island, I took digital photos of things that appealed to me and then I downloaded them onto my laptop and painted from the photos on the pool deck. I did 8 paintings, 2 8x10's and 6 6x8's. Lots of people stopped at the table to see what I was doing, so it was "almost" like plein air painting. I sold 2 paintings that provided a "one-of-a- kind" gift for some fellow cruisers.
Some of my favorite observations were the beautiful color change in the bays, from a transparent aqua in the shallow areas, to a beautiful deep blue in the distance. I loved the colorful buildings in the shopping areas and all the "buzz" of the busy shoppers. I also came to the conclusion that palm trees are very challenging to interpret. There is a fine line between not enough and too much info. Here is my gallery of island observations. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed painting them.
I didn't know many of these buyers, but they all shared a personal connection to the paintings. I have concluded that many people who wish to own a "one-of-a-kind" piece of art, do so because the painting reminds them of a place they have been or an experience they have had.

I had a barn on display at an art show in Door Co. a few years ago, and a young couple walked by and stopped to look at the painting. It was a painting of her grandfather's barn where she had played as a child. They had to go to an ATM machine to get the money to purchase it.

This summer, some very good friends from college spent a few days with us in Door County.

They had both been to Door County when they were younger but hadn't been back for years. We drove them around to our favorite spots and, after breakfast at Al Johnson's, we traveled north towards Gills Rock. As we approached Ellison Bay, John saw the majestic view of the bulkheads of Green Bay and asked Gary to stop the car. We walked to the site where the "Welcome to Ellison Bay"sign is displayed, and both John and his wife, Lis, agreed, that this was the site they would like to have as a painting. I suggested that I wait until we return in fall to paint the sight with the fall color and they agreed. A few weeks ago I went back to the site and this is the result.

John and Lis both grew up in Wisconsin and have not lived in the midwest for most of their married life. They currentlly live in Virginia and they agreed to send me a picture of their painting as it sits on an easel in their home. To them, it is a daily reminder of their Wisconsin roots.

Two new exhibits

As the year draws to a close, I am very pleased to have my work exhibited at two locations, one in Door County, and one in Kansas City. I have 10 paintings on exhibit in the dining room of "The Cornerstone Pub in Baileys Harbor. I call the exhibit, "The Quiet Side" as all of the paintings are of sites near Baileys Harbor and Kangaroo Lake. Winter in Door County is mostly populated by residents, and the Cornerstone is one of the restaurants that stays open all winter. I hope the "locals" will enjoy seeing familiar landscapes as they dine. I completed my first "nocturnal" for the show. I painted the Cornerstone at night this summer with the outdoor patio.

The second exhibit is entitled "Two Gifts" and it is on display in the hallway of "The Church of the Nativity" in Leawood, Kansas. It consists of 40 paintings, both watercolors and oils. I call it, Two Gifts, because it focuses on the work I have done in retirement where the gift of "time" and "travel" are largely responsible for the large body of work. This is a great space as it is the pathway from the church to the recreation hall where all the receptions, pancake breakfasts and social gatherings take place. This is the parish where we belong and the parish near the middle school where I taught, so I am grateful to exhibit my work to an audience where I know so many people.

One of the greatest blessings of retirement is the gift of time! In September, Gary and I took a trip to New England via Tennessee. Our first stop was the "Grand Ole Opry". After a very entertaining evening we drove to Pigeon Forge, TN at the foot of the Smokey Mountains. We experienced the beauty of Smokey Mountain National Park near Gatlinburg and enjoyed some more county music entertainment in the evenings.
We drove though the Applachians enroute to Maine. In September, the color was starting to turn and the vistas were breathtaking. We arrived in Ogunquit, Maine and stayed in a cute cottage within walking distance of the village. We enjoyed fresh lobster each evening and great day trips to several of the lighthouses in Southern Maine. My favorite was the Nubble Lighthouse, in York. We had a beautiful sunny day and I got to sit right in front of this historical site and paint! Gary visited with all the people from the busses who stopped by. We joked about the fact that we were both doing one of our favorite things, me painting and Gary visiting.
Enroute to the Portland Headlight, we drove through Kennebunkport and got to see the Bush Compound right on the ocean (along with several large bus loads of tourists). We hiked the Marginal Way from Ogunquit to Perkin's Cove. It is a paved walkway right along the ocean. I couldn't resist stopping to paint the view back to Ogunquit.
We spent 5 days in Maine and Gary and I agreed that it was a successful trip. We were amazed at how similar coastal Maine was to Door County ( minus the ocean and the lobster). The villages dotting the coastline were charming and very "touristy" just like Door County. Here are the paintings I completed during our stay in Ogunquit.
Its been a while since I have posted on Judie Stang's World. I have been painting this spring and I will post a few of my spring favorites soon. Yesterday, I went down to the Country Club Plaza early, before in got too hot. I set up my easel along Brush Creek. I painted until it got too hot (about 10:00).
Next week, the Plaza will be full of tourists visiting Kansas City for the World Series. Yesterday, the Plaza was very "sleepy" with only a few lawn mowers and an occasional jogger passing by.

I did a painting of a foggy day on the beach last year when we were visiting South Padre Island. I sold it from my website so, I decided to try my luck again this year! I caught this couple walking their fluffy white puppy coming out of the mist. I usually don't put the center of interest in the center of my canvas, but this little guy just had to be in the middle of the painting. There is enough variation in the background with the buildings and the surf to offset the puppy in the middle!

Our daily walks along the beach provide a multitude of "story lines" that entertain us as we walk. We very seldom see a heron along the surf. The gulf is loaded with pelicans and sea gulls, but a heron caught our eye as we walked. Luckily, I had my phone with me so I could catch this sight. As we came closer to the heron a few fishermen came into the view of my lens. When I looked at the photo later, I loved the way all 3 were poised for their "catch of the day"! I had to try to capture it on a little 6x8 canvas. What a blessing!"

Our almost daily walks on the beach on South Padre Island are entered via this path from our condo. It is a very rustic path with vegetation on both sides of the winding wooden planks. I loved the simple colors changed only by the values caused by shadows and texture. The path opens to a world of beauty and strength that the pounding surf provides. This plein air painting was done with the 3 color pallette that James Richards taught in Door County. The predominately cool color scheme is accented only by the yellow blossoms along the path and the red shirt of the walker.Judie Stanghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06149769762016601394noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2569474625364968080.post-9063213902260545182011-10-31T23:48:00.002-05:002011-11-01T10:50:17.751-05:00Nothing Lasts Forever, and update

Earlier this year I posted a painting of an old barn that I painted in Door County last May. I mentioned that the owner stopped by while I was painting, and said I may be the last person to paint this old barn because they were waiting for better weather to replace the roof with a new metal roof! With that in mind, I asked all my readers to suggest a title for the old barn. I got several suggestions, but my friend Sue, from Las Vegas, suggested the title, "Nothing Lasts Forever".
I told her I thought she "nailed it".

This fall, while we were driving on Hwy 57 near Jacksonport, we saw the "new" barn. It is obviously an improvement from a functional standpoint, but for an artist, it lost its unique appeal as an interesting subject. I doubt that it will be an favorite subject for the Plein air painters in Door County!

It is always a little scary to sign up to do a Fall art show in Door County. I have done shows in all types of weather from 30 degrees to 80+. This year luck was on my side for the "Town Line Art show at Fine Line Design Gallery. The weather was in the high 70's and it brought many visitors for the 3-day Columbus Day weekend. The next weekend was Fall Fest in Sister Bay. Temperature was in the 40's and there were 40 mph winds for the vendors to deal with. I decided not to do that show and, for once, made the right decision! What s difference a week makes!

We just returned from our annual October trip to Door County. One of my" highlights" of the trip was taking a workshop from James Richards, a very talented plein air artist. I have been watching James paint around Door County for 5 years during the Plein Air Festival each July. He has been a consistent winner each year and he has a very approachable manner. When I learned that he would be teaching a workshop at the Peninsula Art School while we were there in October, I enrolled in his class. I discovered he is just as good of a teacher as he is an artist. His demonstrations were very informative and his individual critiques were invaluable!

The weather was perfect and unseasonably warm. The fall color in Door County were beautiful. The class was comprised of serious artists and one member was another well-known plein art festival participant, Tom Nachreiner. Tom has won several awards at the festival and yet he was a student in James' class. It proves, no matter how accomplished an artist is, there is always room to learn new approaches to painting. James works with a limited pallette and Tom was getting ready to teach a workshop and he wanted to learn from James how he teaches with a limited pallette.

Here are some of the highlights, I took from the workshop.

1. Values do all the work and color gets all the glory.
2. Build values from greyed tones for the 4 planes, sky, ground, diagonal planes and vertical planes.
3. Add color to the greys, warms and cools. Build up to brilliancy!
4. Leave things feeling unfinished. Degas said, "if you say too much, you bore people."

Here are some of the paintings I completed at the workshop. My approach was less controlled and more fluent. I enjoyed working with a limited pallette, using softer edges.
